IBM plans to build Linux supercomputer
The supercomputer, code-named "Stryker" will be placed at the Army Research Laboratory Major Shared Resource Center, which is situated in Aberdeen, Maryland, reported IBM on Tuesday.
Stryker will consist of 1,186 IBM's most powerful computers bundled together with AMD's 2,300 64-bit compliant microprocessors. The supercomputer will operate on Linux. The firm did not disclose the final cost of the supercomputer, but industry sources report the price to be available later this year.
The system will perform at 10 teraflops of speed and it will be the fastest Linux based computer in the U.S. Military, stated IBM in a statement. The firm also hopes to make it into the Top 20 fastest computers list, which is released two times a year. As of this moment, NEC holds the world's fastest computer record in Japan.
