UN-funded group to target developing world with Desktop Linux LiveCD
The United Nations-funded UNDP-APDIP International Open Source Network (IOSN) has published a free preview of its upcoming LiveCD that will allow computer users to experience the Linux desktop without requiring installation of the open source OS their PCs.
The UN-sponsored program targets the
need for low cost open source Linux to help stimulate the economies of
developing nations. As part of their efforts, the IOSN is promoting the use
of Linux on the desktop.Published in print last month, the organization's "User Guide to Using the Linux Desktop" introduces Internet access and applications such as email and browsers, managing files and folders, and how to use the OpenOffice.org suite.
IOSN and UNDP-APDIP are working to bridge the digital divide and foster economic growth using FOSS and other open source technologies. IOSN is a Center of Excellence for FOSS (free and open source software) in the Asia-Pacific Region. An initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme (APDIP) promotes the development and application of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for poverty alleviation and sustainable human development in the same region.
